does anyone live here or know someone that lives here?  i'm strongly considering renting at electra, but i've heard a lot of bad things about marina district condos and major train noise.

this is one reason why i really dig cortez hill.  it's not quite as nice up there and there isn't as much to do, but it's very quiet.  and i don't mind walking.

I recommend renting at Electra. Right now, Electra gets you the most value for your rent money. Rent a unit on the Pacific Highway side. The train noise bad.. but if you're renting, then it's not that bad. I think it's all relative to value for money.

I sleep well all the time.... but a friend of mine who as a light sleeper rented at The Grande (on the Pacific Hwy side) and he could not sleep. He had to sleep with ear plugs so he moved out.

Several years ago I moved into Archstone Harborview (right next to the tracks on West G St) but had to move to a unit in the other building after a few weeks due to the noise and especially that squeeling from the fright train wheels. I understand that Electra maybe have 10 times better sound proofing but unless I found a unit on high floor I would never live next to those tracks. It's one thing to hear the trains while awake and moving around but that damn noise just grates at you at 2am. Oh you will also love it when those train engineers just lay on that air horn.

I'm not so sure that a high floor would do the trick. I work on the 2nd from the top floor of a downtown highrise. One thing that really surprised me is how the sound carries upwards. Sirens are extremely loud and I can hear the street level guy with the trumpet playing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" pretty clearly (wish he'd learn a new song!).

depressing. seems like a cool building. i'm going to try to check out a rental there this weekend anyway. maybe the soundproofing will be godly.

Part of the fun about living in the downtown area is all the noise. I have a weekend use condo in downtown on the 25th floor and do not hear a thing, even with my deck doors open. I wonder if you would complain if the sounds you heard were of the surf breaking just outside your window?

i already live downtown so i understand downtown noise. there's a big difference between that and a freight train conductor laying on the horn at 3 am. but if that's analogous to the sound of the surf to you, then i don't know what to say.

I must agree w/ ScottSD. I've been looking after my friends dog and condo at the Harbor Club (above 15th floor) for the past week and everything about the unit is perfect...views of the entire SD skyline. However train horns and EXREMELY loud & railcar rumbling is a regular nighttime ritual and do last up to 10-15min in some occasions. I'm not sure if it was disclosed to them before they purchased. The loudest (and longest) trains seem to be after 1am. I've grown somewhat accustom to it, but still woken up nightly. I'm still wondering how I'd feel if I paid over $2m.
