2. BOARD RECOMMENDS PERMIT APPROVAL FOR SOCIAL SERVICE AND MEAL FACILITY FOR SENIORS (East Village) The Board recommended that the Planning Commission recommend that the City Council approve a Conditional Use Permit to allow Senior Community Centers to locate a social service and congregate meal facility in East Village on the second floor of the newly-constructed Smart Corner office building at 1122 Broadway. The facility will provide breakfast and lunch meals, nutrition and health education, healthcare and social services, entitlement and legal counseling and case management. The Conditional Use Permit allows for the relocation of a 12,000 square-foot Social Service Institution and Congregate Meal Facility for seniors the new Smart Corner office site. This proposal includes a request for an exemption for the ¼ mile separation requirement from the other similar facilities. This request is dependent on the previous approval of the 2007 Amendments to the Centre City Planned District Ordinance (PDO). (Vote: 6-0 with Director Cruz absent)

| I don't think you can call that a soup kitchen but I also don't think it's a positive either. It's senior citizens so your downside isn't burglary and rape but more like bad driving, funny clothes and complaints about everything. :) |

I don't think that there'll be complaining from those seniors. Only the rich seniors complain about everything. If anything, these seniors will bring their kids and grand-kids along for the free meals and free air-conditioning. |

| Does anyone know how many people would be expected to be a part of this service? The poor and homeless are a fact of life for downtown, it would be nice to know if we are talking 500 people per day or 50. To some degree having seniors around will dilute the bad elements that transition around San Diego on the trolley. The only time I got into a mugging type of situation was at a trolley stop downtown by some dirt bags that just got off the trolley. |

Drove by this project last night with my doors locked and was amazed at how many do not have "Sold" signs. There were three units occupied that I could see, the rest are skeletons.
So, have move ins started?
This project is headed for rentals very soon. |

$2000 for 900sf? They have to be kidding me.
There's no way he'll rent it for that amount. I would not be surprised to see that unit on the Pre-Foreclosure list soon.

| Yes, but Starbucks is coming.... It's supposed to attract the students from City College. It'll add an intellectual atmosphere to the surroundings. ;)
Perhaps the students have rich families who can afford the rents at Smart Corner. |

| I think the Starbucks is going into the San Diego Housing Commission building and Maui Waui coffee and smothie is going in the residential building. The place should be crawling with college students. Now what other store could open up there and do good business. Liquor store? |
