I am new to the home buying process. Is it common for a real estate agent to want a signed contract? Am I bound to using this agent only if I sign?

You are only bound to the agent if you sign an agreement to work with them. If you do not sign and they take you around then they are like a chauffeur for you. You can sign an agreement with them for a certain amount of time or even for a specific address or building.

You can find dozens of agents who won't ask you to sign a contract. This has the obvious advantage that you can change your mind on who to work with if things don't work out. Unless this is one of the best agents in town I'm not sure where you'd benefit.
