Is it just me or are there so many dogs in the city that the sidewalks smell of urine from the animals? Also the barking is starting to go on non-stop as well. I love dogs but I really wonder how to deal with a dog in a condo that's already fairly small.

Should there be a tax or increased HOA fee for dogs? I know of at least one complex downtown that doesn't allow pets.

The urine you smell is more likely from the homeless--at least that is the case for me as I walk on Ash to work each morning. It isn't that so many people have dogs downtown, it's that the population is much more dense downtown, so you are natually going to see more dogs in a given radius.

While the occasional yapping can be a nuisance, it hardly rates on my scale of annoyances living downtown.

Problem is it never rains in San Diego so the sidewalks are not washed of the smelly unrine.

Most dogs are fine in condos. Humans are generally bigger than dogs, so if you can live in a condo, so can a dog. Just make sure you walk your dog a few times / day.

The dogs will piss and shit on the side walks and nobody picks up the mess. The solid can be picked-up by conscientious dogs owners, but the smelly liquid is left behind. Unless it rains or someone washes the sidewalks, then the stench is horrendous.

People walk on the sidewalks then right onto their luxury condo carpets. Of course they lie down on the carpet also, then they jump right into bed along with their smelly dogs that earlier walked on the dirty sidewalks.

Most people are dirty anyway and don't even take showers before going to bed, after a whole day of perspiration and restroom duties.

We should kill all dogs and serve them in the Vietnamese restaurants. Very good eats! Yum Yum!

I've been to Vietnam and there's a street in Hanoi full of restaurants that only serve dog meat. My tour guide told me that they don't like western dogs because the meat stinks. The locals only like small local muts -- no German Shepherds or Chihuahuas.

New York City just put a low in effect that will fine dog owners for letting their dogs bark during the night or day. I think the time as come for this type of thing in San Diego. As I type this two guys have dogs in front of my building barking at each other while they giggle.

Personally I think people should hang out more with other people not animals. Part of living in the city is getting closer to your neighbors. Go have a drink or coffee and talk about something interesting. Even better get a roommate, not for financial reasons as much as social life.

As I type this in the background there is a dog barking!

As a dog owner, I get irritated by other irresponsible pet owners that let their dogs pee on sidewalks or don't clean up after them. They should be fined - heavily. At the same time, I'd like to see the city replace some of the concrete with grass. It's more beautiful to see green in a concrete jungle, and it allows pet owners to find proper spots for their pets.

Regarding the commenter above "As I type this two guys have dogs in front of my building barking at each other while they giggle.". So what. This is no different than what I hear every Thursday Friday and Saturday night where drunk people yell at each other from half way down the block. If you want complete silence, go live in the suburbs.

Dogs are like kids. They need caring and attentive upbringing, otherwise they act out by barking.

Steven, how do you clean the sidewalk after your dog pees? Do you bring paper towels to absorb the urine.

Grass strips in the city will cause more maintenance for a city that is almost bankrupt. My brother lives in a condo in La Jolla. The grass trips there stink of dog pee and poop. I wouldn't want my dog jumping on my bed after he's walked on that grass. Cleaning the dog paws and caring for the dog is almost a job in itself. But of course, the dog will give you unconditional love and greet you happily when you come home.

"If you want complete silence, go live in the suburbs."

Not looking for complete silence but also not looking for rude people that let their dogs bark incessantly, honk their horns (cabs do this all the time), hair trigger their car alarms, play loud music or drive their insanely-loud-for-no-reason-motorcycles around. We just don't need this much noise.

I applaud New York City for actually doing something about this. San Diego needs to start talking about these rude noise issues. Keep in mind I'm not talking about buses, garbage or airplanes as that is noise that is structural. I'm talking about rude and careless people being held accountable.

I live at Discovery on Cortez Hill and constantly hear a large dog barking. Who are these people that just let this giant dog wake up and annoy a few hundred people that live in this and the building across the street.

If you need a friend go to eHarmony NOT the pet store. If your significant other made so much noise and pissed all over the place would you keep her around?

How much does it cost to properly license a dog?

If there is a dog that consistantly growls and barks, possibly snaps at people what can be done if the owner takes no action?

Ok first of all... Dog pee kills grass. If the city planted grass, it would all be dead from the dog pee.

Second.... If you don't like noise, don't live in the city... I'm so sick of seeing people whine and complain about noise (first it was the train noise and now it's dog noise) on this site.

Third... Happy Friday, go have a beer and stop crying.

I'll agree on a fine for barking dogs, and increased HOA fees when we get to fine parents with screaming babies who crap in our pools and cause us to have the pool drained at the HOA expense due to contamination. And I'll agree to higher taxes on dog owners when all you baby breeders pay higher taxes for sucking up all the money we single people make because we have to pay for your kids education and health care.
Dog's are hardly the problem in the big scheme of things!

Adults are the real problem for breeding out of control kids and dogs. It's all a matter of training. Fine the adults.
